Calculation of open area

The formulas on this page are used to calculate the airflow of a perforation. Changing the size of the holes or the pitch will result in a larger or smaller percentage of open area.

Please note that the formulas do not indicate whether any perforation is possible: they are entirely to be used for calculation of the airflow, e.g. pitch size must in general be minimum hole size + thickness.

Calculation of open area: round holes, triangular pitch

Enter hole size in mm: R
Enter pitch in mm: T

Calculation of open area: round holes, rectangular pitch

Enter hole size in mm: R
Enter pitch 1 in mm: U1
Enter pitch 2 in mm: U2

Calculation of open area: square holes, rectangular pitch

Enter hole size in mm: C
Enter pitch 1 in mm: U1
Enter pitch 2 in mm: U2

Calculation of open area: square holes, staggered pitch

Enter hole size in mm: C
Enter pitch 1 in mm: Z1
Enter pitch 2 in mm: Z2

Calculation of open area: slot holes, staggered pitch

Enter the width of the hole in mm: R
Enter the length of the hole in mm: L
Enter pitch 1 in mm: Z1
Enter pitch 2 in mm: Z2

Calculation of open area: rectangular holes, staggered pitch

Enter the width of the hole in mm: C
Enter the length of the hole in mm: L
Enter pitch 1 in mm: Z1
Enter pitch 2 in mm: Z2
